Event Description: As I See Them: Political Caricatures by Mark Stinson will be on display now through November 9, 2012. This exhibition features caricatures of political figures all done in the past 10 years by syndicated editorial cartoonist, Mark Stinson of Lansing, Michigan. The exhibition will be on display at the Andersen Enrichment Center, 120 Ezra Rust, across from Ojibway Island in Saginaw. Exhibit hours are 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Mark says, “I fell in love with cartooning when I bought my first ‘Mad Magazine’ but I had to hide them from my mother; she didn’t approve.” He drew cartoons for his high school newspaper and while at the University of Texas, signed on as their editorial cartoonist drawing editorial cartoons for three years as a student. After graduating in May 1974, with a BFA in Studio Art, Mark moved to Houston seeking a career in advertising instead, landing a position at The Houston Post as the paper’s editorial cartoonist; replacing a retiring Bill Saylor.

Mark started with three cartoons a week and after a year was up to five a week. During his second year, The Post started syndicating his caricatures nationwide. Mark’s work was carried by 122 newspapers; from the large Boston Globe to the small weekly Olathe Daily Mail and in Michigan, The Detroit Free Press. His career at the Post lasted five years before he left for an art director position at a large advertising agency. Mark continued to supply caricatures for syndication for another eight years.

Stinson doesn’t consider his caricatures as “art,” but rather as a “statement of the essence of the individual I draw at the time they were drawn.” While his caricatures are no longer in syndication, he continues to monitor the political arena and draw for fun.

Art @ the Andersen is a great opportunity for art lovers to connect with the creativity of the Great Lakes Bay Region. The project was established by the Saginaw Arts & Enrichment Commission to give area artists the opportunity to showcase their work and introduce the community to the abundant creativity in the Great Lakes Bay Region. Paintings, prints and note cards on display are available for purchase. Art @ the Andersen is made possible with a grant from the Maxwell K. Pribil Memorial Fund, administered by Citizens Bank Wealth Management, and supported by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts.
