Q: What year did you begin working at your company?
A: I began working for the Garber organization in 1991, my office was located in the old Garber Buick dealership on W. Genesee, now the Mid-Michigan Children’s Museum.
Q: What year did you become a Chamber Diplomat?
A: I became a Chamber Diplomat in 2002, in the program’s second year.
Q: What motivated you to become a Diplomat?
A: I had previously been an Ambassador for the Chamber for 10 years and enjoyed being involved with Chamber activities, and all the networking opportunities the Chamber provided. When I was invited to participate in the Diplomat program and learned how important the program was to help fund the Chamber’s annual budget, I was interested in getting involved. The opportunity to earn a reward trip when you exceed your goals was also very enticing!
Q: What Chamber event do you look forward to the most and why?
A: I personally love the Chairman’s Ball. I’ve attended many over the years and always look forward to experiencing the fun and creative themes of the events, and the “roast” of the outgoing Chairman is always a highlight! I appreciate all the work that goes into planning and executing these wonderful events!
A very close second is the Community Leadership Awards Luncheon which recognizes people in our community for outstanding business development and community philanthropy. It is always inspiring to learn about these individuals and businesses who make such a difference in our GLB Region.
Q: What’s the most memorable connection you’ve made as a Chamber Diplomat?
A: I have had many memorable connections; I don’t think I could pick just one. I’ve had the opportunity to meet and get to know many of the leaders in the Great Lakes Bay Region. Our region is truly blessed with great people who are passionate about our communities and devote themselves to making our region a great place to work, live, worship and play. Leaders who take the time serve on nonprofit boards to help them provide much needed services to our community. Leaders who are giving of their time, talent and treasure. Meeting these leaders inspires me to be a better person.
Q: How has serving as a Diplomat helped you in your full-time job?
A: As a Diplomat you have many wonderful opportunities to network and build relationships with others in the community. Building strong relationships fosters trust between organizations, leads to teamwork and cooperation, and provides opportunities for growth for your business. People like to do business with people they know, like and trust, and being a Diplomat offers opportunities to build the kind of relationships that help grow our business and help us better serve our community.
Q: What’s one Chamber program or initiative you’re especially proud to help support through sponsorships?
A: I personally love sponsoring and attending the Community Leadership Awards Luncheon which recognizes people in our community for outstanding business development and community philanthropy. These individuals and businesses that are honored have selflessly contributed in many ways to the community and deserve this recognition. I enjoy being present at the event to honor them and thank them for their many contributions.
Q: What advice would you give to a member who’s unsure whether sponsorship is the right fit for their business?
A: The Chamber offers many different sponsorship opportunities that I would encourage a conversation to learn more about the member’s community engagement goals and then look at events or marketing opportunities that might best align with those goals and their budget.
Q: What’s the most rewarding feedback you’ve received from a member you helped connect with the Chamber?
A: Thank you for introducing me to ‘so and so.’ I think getting a personal introduction to someone you have wanted to meet can really help someone start a relationship that otherwise seemed challenging to obtain. Opening a door through an introduction can be extremely helpful for a new member.
Q: What is something you always have at your desk?
A: I always have pictures of my family on my desk, and usually a glass of water.
Q: How do you like to spend your free time when you’re not working or volunteering?
A: I enjoy reading and traveling with my family.
