Meet Amelia Whitford

Amelia Whitford
AVP Branch Manager
Independent Bank
Q: When did you begin working at your company?
A: 2009

Q: When did you become a member of the Saginaw County Young Professionals Network?
A: 2017

Q: What motivated you to join the YPN Steering Committee?
A: After I spent a few years just being minimally involved, and then serving on a sub-committee, I decided it was time to step it up! I wanted to be a part of the group’s leadership and help shape/grow the group. I met a lot of cool people, and wanted to help others do the same.

Q: What’s the most memorable connection you’ve made as YPN member?
A: I have a few! Overall, I met a whole new girlfriend group. We get together often (outside of YPN events even) we text, send memes, and celebrate with each other.

Q: What YPN event do you look forward to the most and why?
A: I love anything to do with sports, so Spirit nights are always a fun time! I also love the wrapping event in December called Shoebox Saginaw. So many of us show up, it’s a party, and it’s for such a meaningful cause.

Q: What’s one networking tip you’d share with new YPN members?
A: If your new and feeling nervous, you are not alone. We have all been there. Don’t be afraid. Show up, and you will make connections.

Q: Tell us one fun fact about you that might surprise people.
A: I have twin girls who are 8! I am also obsessed with reading. I try to read about 100 books a year.

Q: What was your first job?
A: I worked at Baynes Apple Farm in high school. I got to help bake cookies, pies, and doughnuts! It was a delicious job.

Q: Tell us how the YPN has made you realize, or appreciate more, what Saginaw County has to offer in regard to living, working or playing here?
A: There is so much more to Saginaw than I realized. The people, the community, and the resources. Give people a chance, get to know them. Shop locally and support each other. Use the Chamber and its resources to help you if you need it. There are important people here striving to make this town the best it can be. Ask yourself how you can help be part of the solution, and not the problem.

Q: What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
A: On our honeymoon, my husband and I went cave diving and swam in underwater caves. I am slightly claustrophobic, so it was way outside my comfort zone, but it ended up being so much fun and gorgeous sites.

Q: What inspires or motivates you to be part of the YPN?
A: I want younger people who are looking for a “place” to realize we can be that “place” Come and meet new people, make connections, and find your place with us.
