YPN Golf League 4/15/2013 - 8/26/2013

Whether you're a seasoned golfer or your game is a bit green, the YPN golf league accommodates your skill level. This co-ed league, just for young professionals (ages 21 - 40), consists of teams of two that compete against a different team of two each week. Pairs play best shot, also known as scramble style, for nine holes.

The league will meet on Monday nights at Swan Valley Golf Course with a tee time of 5:30pm. The league will begin April 15th and end on August 26th. There will be no league the evening of Monday, May 27th. Cost per person is $15 walking or $20 with cart.

Do your children volunteer or would you like to them to start getting involved in helping the community? Tri-City Motor Speedway would like to reward our youth for their volunteer efforts throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region. Our desire is for children to have a fun and meaningful learning experience and see the impact volunteering has on their community.

Racing Rascals is Tri-City Motor Speedway’s kids club. Kids who enter the club receive a name badge and get to participate in different events throughout the season. To become a Racing Rascal, stop by the shirt shack to sign-up and receive your name badge. Youth (5-14) who complete community service through this program are entered to spin the prize wheel. Every child that turns in a Racing Rascals Volunteer Form receives a prize. Teenagers (15-18) many enter to receive a $500 scholarship for college. The annual “Spring Into Art” exhibition will take place at First Congregational Church, 403 South Jefferson Avenue, that began on Sunday, May 19, 2013. “Spring Into Art” is a month-long celebration of art highlighting the work of regional artists, who are invited to submit exhibit entries. Original works of media including paintings, drawings, collages, fibres, and ceramics have been accepted. Though pre-registration was not required, an entry fee of $20 accompanied entries. Two pieces of work were accepted from each artist. A total of 81 pieces of work from 41 artists was accepted.

Mid-Michigan artists and art organizations were invited to take part in the exhibit, which has occurred each May and June for the last three decades.

Galleries are open to the public Sunday mornings from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and each weekday, Tuesday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The church’s Baum Street office entrance offers guests handicap accessibility and the most convenient entrance to the show. The final day of the exhibit is Sunday, June 16.

Over $1000 in prizes will be awarded during the exhibition. Becky Sullivan,SASA 2D Visual Arts teacher for 30 of her 34 years of art teaching experience, served as juror. She holds a bachelor of science degree from Western Michigan University in K-12 Art. She also possesses a master’s degree in Art/Education from SVSU. Her award-winning students have been recognized through: The Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation, Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, Michigan Youth Arts Festival, the Governor’s Traveling Exhibit, and both the state and national Congressional Arts Exhibits, among many others. She was the 2002 Coca-Cola Co. Distinguished Teacher of the Arts national level nominee, with her student placing in the top 10% through the ARTS Recognition and Talent Search program. The Columbia University’s Columbia Scholastic Press Association has recognized her numerous times as both a Gold and a Silver Medal teacher through the national adjudication of her student’s art. She was one of the founders of SASA’s ICONS art and literary magazine and remains the magazine’s co-advisor, a publication which has earned the highest honors through Columbia’s program since its inception in 1988.

First place went to Bill Brinker of Saginaw for Lord of the Flea Market, second place went to Matt Krease of Saginaw for his Lost at Sea, and third place went to Julia Rohde of Saginaw for her A Closer Look. Merit awards went to Stacie Rose of Birch Run for her As Dusk Settles In, and to Rosemary Hayes of Birch Run for her Poppy Symphony III. Another Merit Award given by Catherine Konn went to Purple Flowers in Spring by Jane Rupp of Saginaw. The 2013 Purchase Award went to John Roberts for his Golden Moments.”

Chippewa Nature Center presents the popular Native Plant Sale Friday and Saturday, May 24 & 25 from 9 am to 8 pm. Members are invited to a special preview sale on Thursday, May 23 from 1-8 pm. Customers may become a member and shop the sale on Thursday. Plants will be available for immediate purchase, and cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted.

Many varieties of native plants will be available including grasses, wildflowers, ferns such as Maiden Hair, trees, shrubs and specialty plants such as Jack-in-the-Pulpit. A full pictorial list of plants available at this year’s sale, complete with growing conditions, wildlife value and more, is available online at www.chippewanaturecenter.org. The “Wild Ones” native plant group, local master gardeners and other experts will be on-hand to consult with shoppers on their plant purchases.

Plants propagated from native genotypes are easier to establish in your home landscape than non-native plants. Once established, they require no irrigation and no chemicals, and their natural hardiness makes it less likely that you’ll need to replace them. Also, given a little space of their own, many native plants act a lot differently when “tamed.” Plants that would be in serious competition in the wild suddenly become free in your garden to show off their attributes, and can put on a show to rival any cultivated species.

Using native plants in your landscape is one way you can contribute to a healthy ecosystem! Native plants provide the food, shelter and cover that wildlife needs to survive. Many exotic plant species not only fall short on this critical function, but can also become harmfully invasive, choking out or hybridizing their native neighbors. Many exotics are invasive, and may well take over the landscape, leaving you nothing else to enjoy.

Counseling Services are essential to individuals and families going through
difficult life stressors, loss, trauma or transition. The Counseling Center of Child
and Family Services Master’s level, licensed clinicians provide comprehensive
outpatient mental health services to children, adolescents, adults, senior and
families. Child and Family Services is a non-profit agency which has been
providing services to individual and families for over 140 years. Other services
include the Employee Wellness Center-EAP and the Sexual Assault Center.

May 14th, 2013- Feld Entertainment, Inc., producers of Disney on Ice and Disney Live!, is taking top performing cable TV series for preschoolers to the stage in Disney Junior Live On Tour! Pirate and Princess Adventure. Featuring characters from the smash hits Sofia the First and Jake and the Never Land Pirates, this brand new production launches a 90-city national tour in July 2013. Tickets for the Saginaw performances at the Heritage Theater in The Dow Event Center, November 2nd, 2013, go on sale May 28th, 2013.

In this original storyline, Mickey and Minnie lead the audience on an exciting adventure that will have families rooting for their favorite pirate Jake and Disney's first little girl princess Sofia. Disney Junior Live on Tour! Pirate and Princess Adventure begins with a special interactive pre-show featuring the loveable 6-year-old doctor to toys and stuffed animals, Doc McStuffins. Children and their parents will sing "The Check-Up Song" along with Doc as she provides tender love and care. Advance Auto Parts Monster Jam, the world’s premiere monster truck series, are on sale now! Monster Jam events are affordably priced for the whole family with seats starting at $15 for adults and $10 for kids (ages 2-12). Tickets are also available at The Dow Event Center Box Office, all Ticketmaster ticket outlets, including online at www.ticketmaster.com, or Charge-by-Phone (800) 745-3000.

Monster Jam roars into The Dow Event Center for three shows: Friday, February 21st at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday February 22nd at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The event will feature outrageous jumps, crushed cars, plenty of concrete-streaking action, and some of the most incredible “donuts” ever! Truck lineup and show elements are TBD.

The Party in the Pits is on Saturday, February 22nd from 11:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m., giving fans the opportunity to get a view of the trucks up close and meet the drivers of the massive monster trucks. Pit passes are $10 and must be accompanied by a valid Saturday 2:00 p.m. event ticket for Pit Party entry. Pit passes are on sale now.
